Stop Allowing One Week Returns on Kindle Books

Stop Allowing One Week Returns on Kindle Books

Writers and small publishers work hard for very little money, and while Amazon is the prime venue to sell e-books, they have a little-known policy that is unfair and detrimental to independent publishers.  The current policy is that a Kindle book can be returned for a full refund within a week of purchase—no questions asked. This, of course, is an opportunity for unscrupulous people to literally steal an author’s work: buy it, read, it, return it.  Compare it to going to a store, buying a shirt, wearing it for a week, then returning it. To see the policy, go to http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=200144510

As a small publisher representing primarily new writers, I know the return of even a few books can make an enormous difference. To see half of an author’s books returned when that author gets good reviews is disheartening and financially detrimental to everyone involved in the creative process.

Please sign this petition to let Amazon know that your support small and independent publishers and that you want them to change this unfair policy to a more reasonable 24 hours–plenty of time for a person to return the book if it were bought by mistake.

This petition is not only for writers, publishers, artists, and others in the small publishing industry, but for every reader who enjoys the discovery of a hidden gem in a new writer’s work.
